The Canopy is my interpretation of a windsor chair, designed around comfort, support and a sense of enclosure. Its generous proportions and gently reclined back encourage you to settle into the chair, while the sweeping arms and tall crest create a feeling of being surrounded without the chair ever feeling heavy or closed in.

At the heart of the chair is its deeply sculpted ash seat. Shaped by hand using an scorp and travisher, the hollowed surface supports the body and flows gently into the surrounding edges. Rasps, spokeshaves and scrapers are used to refine the form, leaving subtle traces of the making process within the finished surface.

The beech legs, stretchers and slender spindles are individually shaped by hand, with the spindles refined using a spokeshave rather than turned to a mechanically uniform profile. They rise through the sweeping arms towards the high crest, creating the light, open structure that gives the Canopy its distinctive silhouette.

Traditional round mortice-and-tenon construction runs throughout the chair, with wedged joints forming a strong and honest structure. Rather than concealing its construction, the Canopy allows the joinery, variations in the timber and quiet evidence of handwork to become part of its character.

Despite its height, the Canopy has been designed to feel relaxed rather than formal. The angle of the seat and back allows the sitter to lean naturally into the chair, while the sculpted seat, arms and crest provide support around the body. The result is a chair intended not simply to be sat on, but to settle into.

Each Canopy is made to order in Norfolk, with an ash seat and arms and beech legs, stretchers and spindles as standard. Natural variations in the timber and the hand-shaped surfaces mean that no two chairs will be exactly alike. Alternative timbers can be discussed as part of the commissioning process.
