This one-off Carved Edition takes the familiar form of The Nook and explores a much more expressive, tactile surface.

The seat and crest are made from ebonised ash, with beech used for the legs, stretchers and spindles. The seat is first shaped by hand using a scorp, travisher and rasps, creating the familiar sculpted form of The Nook before the surface is ebonised using a homemade iron acetate solution.

Once ebonised, the seat is worked again with a gouge. Individual cuts are worked across the entire surface, breaking through the darkened timber to reveal the natural ash beneath and creating the distinctive variation in colour and texture.

Traditional round mortice-and-tenon joinery is used throughout, with visible joints secured using contrasting walnut wedges. As with the Signature Collection, the exposed tenon ends are finished by hand with a gouge rather than planed flush, leaving small areas of texture that make the construction part of the finished piece.

The piece is finished with my own blend of natural oils and waxes, bringing out the contrast between the ebonised and freshly carved ash while retaining the tactile quality of the surface.

The result is a piece that remains unmistakably The Nook, while allowing the process of making to become a much more visible part of its character.
